Edwina Sandys, a renowned British-born artist, author and granddaughter of Winston Churchill will be one of the artists shown in Spartanburg Art Museum's upcoming exhibition Another Body, which coincides with an exhibition of her grandfather's work at the new Rose Sallenger Richardson Center for the Arts at Wofford College. Sandys, who currently lives in New York, will be present to speak about her work at the exhibition opening at Spartanburg Art Museum on June 15th, and at a special event held the following day, also at Spartanburg Art Museum. The second event is the first in a new series of Museum events titled Curator's Notebook, which grants attendees special access to art and artists featured in Spartanburg Art Museum's exhibitions. For Curator's Notebook Edwina will discuss her memories of Winston Churchill, life, and world-spanning artistic career.
Sandys has been an artistic trailblazer for more than five decades, constantly producing artwork that has been at every moment both relevant and challenging while witty, imaginative, and accessible. Her body of work is rooted in the female experience and female perspective, but strikes a delicate balance between the specific and universal, personal and political, and domestic and public; her work, much like herself, transcends easy categorization and achieves an enduring significance and appeal for people of any gender, age, or background. It's particularly remarkable to be able to view her and her grandfather Winston Churchill's work on view at the same time in the same city.
"Sandys is an artist I was particularly interested in exhibiting in the larger Another Body exhibit. She doesn’t shy away from expressing and celebrating the female form. She highlights the joys of womanhood, from our personal intimacies to our intellectual appetites. It is indeed a professional highlight to work with such a renowned artist – one who doesn’t shy away from feminist ideals or truths." - Elizabeth Goddard, Executive Director of Spartanburg Art Museum
Edwina Sandys' work will be on display at Spartanburg Art Museum during Another Body, which runs from June 15th through September 10th. The exhibition is free and open to the public from 10am-5pm Tuesday through Saturday, and from 1-5pm on Sunday. Books and original prints by the artist will be for sale throughout the exhibition. The Spartanburg Art Museum was founded in 1907 by artists Margaret Law and Josephine Sibley Couper, with the view that "art should not just be the luxury of a few, but the luxury of all." Today, it is one of only a handful of Contemporary Art Museums operating in the Southeastern United States, supporting the creative capacities of the region through an international exhibitions program, youth outreach programs, an art school, a large permanent collection, and an extensive public art program and calendar of community events.
The Spartanburg Art Museum is a regional museum promoting contemporary visual arts by inspiring and engaging people of all ages through exhibitions and education.
